Defy expectations

Defy expectations was written on the pink post-it note that went up on the wall at a recent Guiding Principles workshop we did for a client. Beside it was Challenge the status quo on a blue post-it. It comes as no surprise then to listen to this group talk about how they want to be a world class organization.

It takes a lot of guts to take on Defy Expectations and Challenge the Status Quo as guiding principles. It means setting a solid foundation from the beginning in which people trust one another and feel safe taking risks, experimenting and sometimes failing. It requires people to fully trust their leader as they traverse the unknown. It means they need to fully rely on their fellow team members to have their well-being in mind when they make decisions and vice versa.

This is the way remarkable work is achieved. When people set the stage to openly entertain any idea as a way to achieve growth. Nothing becomes too outside the realm of possibility, nothing is too foolish to consider.

Aristotle once said, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” When we can take this approach in our organizations to go beyond our biases, stereotypes, beliefs, and self-interests and be ready to examine ourselves under a new light, then we can begin to defy expectations and challenge the status quo.

With this in mind, we developed a new poster to encourage this type of thinking in your own groups. Because we at Build a Kick Ass Company are a little less sophisticated than Aristotle, we summed up his thoughts with our “Why the Hell Not” poster.

Feel free to print it off and put it up in your own office or meeting room as a reminder to go beyond your pre-conceived notions and expand your thoughts to see just how far you can go.
