The common definition of a team is a group of people working together towards a common goal. While correct in essence, if you want great teams, this definition falls short. We believe what takes a team to the next level is having a group of people who go out of their way to make each other look good. This is a team composed of people who are deeply committed to one another.
This definition takes into account the fact that we may be biologically-driven towards helping one another. Recent studies show that contrary to the belief that we are selfish creatures, we are actually built for altruism. It is in our nature to be selfless.
This is why we feel so miserable when we are forced to work in environments that don’t promote helping one another, collaboration and cooperation. The more competitive and cutthroat our workplace is, the worse we feel.
If you’re looking to build strong, healthy teams, create an environment which gives people opportunities to help one another. The individuals, teams and company will be better for it.
