It's okay to not be ready

“It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now.
Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.”

- Hugh Laurie

We need to stop asking ourselves if we’re ready. Unless you can see into the future, there is no sure way of knowing if you are ready to face what is to come. When pursuing new goals, ideas, and projects, the question we need to be asking ourselves is: “Am I willing?”

Asking if you’re willing instead of if you’re ready changes the dynamic of the conversation.

You don’t need to be strong, you just need to be okay with working hard. You need to be willing to fall down and get back up again. You need to be willing to push yourself beyond your boundaries.

You don’t need to be fearless, you just need to be okay with being afraid. You need to be willing to keep going even when you’re scared.

You don’t need to be the smartest, you just need to be okay with not knowing everything. You need to be willing to learn and be humble in the face of your potential ignorance.

You don’t need to be confident, you just need to be okay with being unsure. You need to be willing to be courageous in the face of the unknown.

“Am I ready?” gives you permission to hold back.

“Am I willing?” gives you permission to go forward.
