We put a high value on commitment. When we are committed to others, we put more trust in them. When we are committed to a project, we’ll work to overcome more obstacles. When we are committed to a company, we’ll give more energy and time. Commitment keeps us in the game for the long haul.
However, we need to be aware of the dark side of commitment. High levels of commitment can make us irrational. Commitment can blind us to problems and weaknesses within projects, ideas, and people that we should be addressing. It can cause us to ignore opportunities that don’t fit well with our current loyalties.
By all means, commit. But don’t let that commitment close off your mind. Blind commitment doesn’t benefit you or the person, project or company.
