Eating dirt

Gary Vaynerchuk advises entrepreneurs to get used to eating dirt. He says that if you want to be successful and keep growing, you must learn how to love doing the dirty work. If you can love doing the hard stuff, then success will be a natural by-product.

This is the same for any team and organization. If you want your group to be driven and passionate and energized, you need to find a way to make them love the struggle. The grind needs to be part of the joy of the job.

As human beings, we are built for struggle. We are hardwired to fight when we are challenged, grow when we see the need, and stay strong in the face of adversity. However, we are also programmed to be lazy if it suits us and that’s when mediocrity seeps in.

If you can find the right story – the right crusade, if you wish – people are able to see the struggle as the part that brings true meaning to their work.
